Homeschooling in Missouri, and where a co-op fits

Missouri asks less of homeschooling families than most states. There is no form to file with the state, no approval to wait for, and no required testing. What the law does ask for is instruction and a record of it: 1,000 hours across the school year, of which 600 should be in reading, language arts, maths, social studies or science, and at least 400 of those 600 at your home. Alongside that you keep a plan book or diary of what you taught, a portfolio of your child’s work, and a record of how they are getting on. Those records are reviewable only by your local prosecuting attorney — not by a school district or the state.

A co-op doesn’t change any of that. Joining one doesn’t register you with anyone, and it doesn’t hand your paperwork to somebody else: the hours your children spend in co-op classes count as instruction like any other, and it’s still on you to write them down. It’s worth being clear-eyed about that, because a well-run co-op can feel so much like school that it’s easy to assume someone else is keeping the register. They’re not.

What a co-op does offer is the part that’s hard to do alone. Someone else teaches the subject you dread. Your children get a class to be in — a group to present to, argue with, and sit beside. You get a morning a week with other adults doing the same job, which matters more than it sounds. Costs and effort are shared: one parent’s microscope, another’s way with teenagers, a room hired between twenty families rather than one.

The fit is the whole thing, and it varies enormously — faith-based or secular, academic or enrichment, drop-off or stay-and-help, three families or eighty.
